Independent Technical Review of Welding Decisions

Sometimes you just need a second set of expert eyes before you commit real money. A welding decision, a fabrication package, an inspection result, or the classic ‘it can’t be done’. More often than not a viable, cheaper path exists, and it takes someone independent to see it.

Big welding and fabrication decisions carry real risk, and the people making them often have skin in the outcome. An independent review isn’t about second-guessing your team. It’s about pressure-testing the decision against the standards and against decades of practice, before the concrete sets and the option to change your mind gets expensive.

How I work it

I provide third party review of welding decisions, fabrication packages, procedures, and inspection outcomes. I read the package the way the code intends, check the technical basis, and flag where risk, cost, or non-compliance is hiding.

I’m particularly useful where you’ve been told something can’t be done, or that the only option is the expensive one. I’ve spent 40 years finding the path other people said wasn’t there. A repair instead of a replacement. A qualified alternative instead of a full requalification. A detail that meets the code without the gold plating.

Where it applies

Fabrication packages to AS/NZS 1554 and AS/NZS 5131, pressure equipment to AS 1210 and AS 3992, pipework to AS 4041, ASME B31.3, and the ASME BPVC. Repair decisions, fitness for service questions, procedure and qualification disputes, and inspection results you’re not sure you trust.

FAQ

We’ve been told the repair can’t be done. Is a review worth it?
Almost always. ‘It can’t be done’ usually means it can’t be done the way it was first approached. A viable, cheaper path exists more often than not, and finding it is exactly where an independent review earns its fee.

Is this the same as inspection or NDT?
No. Inspection tells you what a weld looks like. An independent technical review tells you whether the decision, the procedure, or the package is sound, compliant, and the best available option.

Will a review undermine our own engineers?
No. A good review backs a sound decision and strengthens the case for it. Where it finds an issue, your team hears it early and privately, while it’s still cheap to fix.
