Design For Manufacture: Get the Weld Right on the Drawing
By the time a drawing hits the floor, the labour, the consumables, and a fair chunk of the rework are already locked in. The welder just pays the bill the designer wrote. The cost of a weld is decided at the drawing board, long before an arc is struck.
The expensive decisions happen before fabrication
A full penetration butt where a fillet would carry the load. A joint detailed in a spot nobody can reach without a mirror and a prayer. A material and process combination that drags in preheat and PWHT you never needed. None of it shows up as a design cost. I review the design before fabrication starts, reading it the way the shop will have to build it. Joint type against the actual load. Weld volume. Access and welding position. The process the detail forces you into. Whether the specified requirements are genuine or just carried over from the last job.
Then I give you detailing that keeps the engineering intent and the code compliance while stripping out the over-specification. Smaller welds where they’re enough. Positions a welder can actually run downhand. Processes that suit the work rather than fight it.
