Vendor Assessment and Development for Fabrication Suppliers

Accepting a fabricator on trust is how rework and rejected product end up on your project, usually at the worst possible time. A tidy quote and a confident sales pitch tell you nothing about whether they can actually weld what they’ve promised, to the standard, on your timeline.

Trust is not a procurement strategy

A fabricator’s brochure and their capability are two different things. The gap between them lands on your project as delays, repairs, and product you can’t accept. By the time it shows up at inspection or in service, the cost of getting it wrong has multiplied and the schedule’s already blown.

How I work it

I assess supplier capability against AS/NZS 5131 and ISO 3834, on the floor, before you commit. I verify the things that actually matter. Qualified procedures and welders to ISO 15614 and ISO 9606. Genuine competence, not just certificates on a wall. Equipment, material control, inspection, and whether the system is real or theatre for visitors.

Where there are gaps, I don’t just fail them and walk away. If the fabricator’s worth developing, I work with them to close the gaps, so you get a capable supplier rather than one less name on the list.

What you walk away with

  • An honest read on whether a fabricator can deliver what they promised
  • Verification against AS/NZS 5131 and ISO 3834, not sales talk
  • A clear list of gaps and the risk each one carries
  • A development path to bring a promising supplier up to standard

Where it applies

Structural steel to AS/NZS 5131, pressure equipment to AS 1210 and AS 3992, pipework to AS 4041 and ASME B31.3. Whether you’re a principal qualifying a supplier panel, a builder placing a subcontract, or a fabricator wanting to prove you’re the real deal, this is how capability gets verified before money and schedule are on the line.

If you’re the fabricator being assessed, get ahead of it with a Welding Management System. For a broader read on a fabrication package before award, see Independent Technical Review. Close capability gaps in a supplier’s crew with Customised Training and Mentoring.

FAQ

Can you assess a supplier before we award the contract?
Yes, and that’s the best time. A pre-award assessment tells you what you’re buying before the money and the schedule are committed, while you still have options.

What if the fabricator falls short?
That’s not automatically a no. Where the gaps are workable and the fabricator’s willing, I can work with them to close the gaps so you end up with a capable supplier rather than starting the search again.

We’re the fabricator. Can you help us pass an assessment?
Yes. I work from both sides. I can prepare your operation and your welding management system so you stand up to an AS/NZS 5131 and ISO 3834 assessment on your merits.
